Obituary for Leo John Melnyk

Leo John Melnyk
Born: November 9, 1932 Winnipeg, Manitoba
Died: August 6, 2017 Toronto, Ontario

Peacefully at home surrounded by his family, Leo left us to be with the Lord. With his wife Mary (Zawerucha) of 63 years by his side, sons Deacon Michael (Karen), Dr. Paul (Diane), daughters Teresa (Jorge) and Lesia along with grandchildren Justin (Christina), Andrew, Sarah, Alexander and Peter, all mourn the loss to his long battle with cancer. He passed without pain and in complete acceptance that the Holy Spirit was with him to guide the way. He was a longtime employee of Rosco-Vicwest. Deacon Leo was also a charter member of the Knights of Columbus Sheptytsky council 5079 and Sir Knight of the 4th degree assembly 1730. Longtime committee member and part of the founding body of St. Mary’s Church (276 Bathurst Street) and Our Lady of Perpetual Help (Leeds Street) in Toronto. He would go out of his way day or night to make sure all was proper and just. A very kind gentle man, always giving of himself by going out of his way to make sure things were done just right. From driving the Sister Servants back to Austin Terrace after catechism classes to helping mop up flooded church hall basements or visiting the sick and praying with them; if you asked then he was there. Later in life he was ordained to sub deacon in 1997 and to deacon in 2002 and served at St. Demetrius the Great Martyr Ukrainian Catholic Church in Toronto until his illness took over. Then he continued to pray the Office of the Hours for al those in the world who could not. The family wishes to thank Dr. Trinkaus and the team at St. Michaels Hospital, Dr. Maida of Hospice Vaughan, Ben, Sergei, Myroslava and all the visiting staff who attended at the home for the past year. As expressions of sympathy donations to The Ukrainian Canadian Care Centre, Lymphoma and Leukemia Society or the Hospice Vaughan Building Fund would be greatly appreciated by the family. Resting at St. Demetrius Church, 135La Rose Avenue on Tuesday from 4pm to 9pm. with a Parastas at 7:30pm. Divine Liturgy Wednesday August 9, 2017 from St. Demetrius Church at 10am with interment at Prospect Cemetery. Arrangements for Deacon Leo are entrusted with Newediuk Funeral Home, Kipling Chapel.
