John and Karen Cole

Al and Irene were the greatest neighbours for many, many years. They welcomed us and loaned us tools when we arrived in '77. We'd share the odd drink and many and dirty joke across the fence. We shared recipes and excess produce from our gardens. Al was especially proud of his beautiful glads, and for a couple of years after he moved to Fairview, John raised some in memory. Never quite the big show that Al's were. We remember parties where he fiddled. I recall one summer corn roast not many years after we'd moved in, that he and his group sang a parody of "You picked a fine time to leave me, Lucille." The Trudeaus had split up and it became Margaret, not Lucille; three hungry children and I'm losin' Quebec, etc. We can't be at the funeral as we're flying to the Azores tonight (Friday), but we're thinking of all of you and sympathize. We'll never forget Al and Irene. But we usually won the pea planting contest, just for the record. The prize was a bottle of wine from the loser!! Wonderful neighbours for nearly forty years.
