Condolences

Condolence From: Martina

I too have only recently learned of the sad news and would like to use this opportunity to express my condolences to the bereaved.
Finchen was the aunt of my mother Monika, daughter of Katharina Link, another sister of Finchen.
Unfortunately I only have memories of her from my childhood, but when the family comes together, they always talk lovingly about the aunts in Canada (Trudchen + Finchen).

Ruhe in Frieden

Condolence: I am writing this for my mother, who was a close friend of Josefine and for myself as a close friend of her son. The Roerigs were among the first friends my parents made upon immigrating to Canada and both families embraced Canada as their new home. My mother was quite close to her and always named her Finchen (I’m not sure about the spelling but one pronounced it as Feenchen). My direct memories are of her being a loving and happy woman. She was also a hard working business entrepreneur with her husband Gustav, and never complained.

For a time, they owned and operated a resort in Burleigh Falls. During my visits, I remember her up early in the morning changing bed linen and doing the laundry. The rest of a typical day would be busy with cleaning, fixing, connecting with guests and boaters, dispensing bait worms and more, often extending to late at night. Yet she was always optimistic.

One time Herb and I did some pretend gymnastics for her because she was apparently quite the gymnast in her youth, including some special performances and competitions.

My mother and she had a great session a few years ago to catch up on old times. When she talks about Josefine, it’s always with fondness. Undoubtedly, she was a loving influence on Monika and Robbie and I’m sure you will miss her very much.

Condolence: Your Grandmother's wonderful, bright welcoming smile is so clearly set in our memories. Her kindness, honesty, giggle and engaging presence was a model for us to feel comfort in while we knew her and going forward in our memory of her. We were so fortunate to know her and be included in the Roerig home. Robert and Monika, I know that as we all will miss her, we are blessed to see her smile (and your Dad's smile) when we see your faces.
