Obituary for Mary Elizabeth Gibson (Cover)

GIBSON, Mary Elizabeth (Cover) -
Mary Elizabeth Gibson (Cover) died at the age of 87 on Monday, March 5, 2018 in Toronto after a short illness which she handled with her characteristic strength of spirit and unfailing sense of humour. Mary was born in Markham, Ontario on March 6, 1930 into a loving, hard-working family of nine. She earned a nursing degree at Wellesley Hospital in 1951 and always treasured her ongoing association with the other twenty nurses in her graduating class, often observing, “We went through everything together.” In 1953, Mary married Franklin Douglas (Doug) Gibson, a lawyer, and in the following years had six children: John (Barbara), Jennifer (Steve), Chris (Larry), Mark, Peter (Deb), and James. Throughout her life, Mary shared with her children and others her vibrant interest in history, art, science, and current events. A lively enthusiasm also infused her involvement with her book club, bridge club, French lessons, tennis, and curling. After Mary’s marriage ended in 1970 she returned to school, earning a Bachelor of Applied Arts in Social Work from Ryerson Polytechnical Institute in 1985. Her subsequent volunteer social work with single mothers and abused women and children was distinguished by the patience, generosity, and empathy that always enhanced her relationships with friends and relatives. Mary is survived by her children; her niece Deirdre, who was like a daughter to her; grandchildren Paul, Allen, Chris, Cameron, Doug, and Gillian; and her sisters Anne and Chris. The family wishes to thank everyone at The Village of Humber Heights for their wonderful, compassionate care. A celebration of Mary’s life will be held on Saturday, March 24, 2018 from 2-4 p.m. in the Balmoral Room (main entrance by the 3 flag poles) at the Old Mill, Etobicoke (21 Old Mill Rd). Free parking passes will be available at the entrance to the Balmoral Room. A brief tribute will be given at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Indspire (indspire.ca) or the Heart and Stroke Foundation (heartandstroke.ca).
