PERRY, Henry -
Peacefully (at Lake Ridge Health, Ajax), in his 97th year. Beloved husband of Kathleen (née Cammack), for 72 years. Loving father of Joan (David), Mary (Eric), Susan (Andy) and the late David (Kathy), loving grandad to 13 grandchildren and a plethora great grandchildren. A D-Day, World War II veteran who served in England, France, Holland and Belgium, Henry worked for the Liquor Control Board of Ontario for 31 years and spent a lifetime in community service. He was a lifelong member of the Royal Canadian Legion where he held every local office, as well as District Chair and Zone Commander and spent 40 years in the Ontario Regiment Association where he held various offices including President and Membership Chairman. His fundraising activities are legendary, including funding for the Juno Beach Memorial project in 2001 run jointly with Walmart. He was an Honorary Life Member of the Dominion Command and awarded the Meritorious Service Medal with Palm Leaf for outstanding service. In retirement, Henry operated the "kit" shop at the R. S. McLaughlin Armoury for several years. He was a life member of the Canadian Order of Foresters, serving as Whitby branch president for 5 years.
Henry served the Whitby community for many years in a number of diverse activities. He was an elected School Board Trustee, led the formation of the Bay Ratepayers Association, was Chair of the celebrations marking the Queens Silver Jubilee, a life long member of the Anglican Church, he was fundraising chairman for St. John's Anglican Church tower window fund marking Canada's 100th anniversary with a lighted stained glass window depicting the history of the town, fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society, the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the J O Ruddy Hospital, a life member of the Canadian Ornamental Game Bird Association. In 1991, Henry received the town’s highest honor, the Peter Perry Award for outstanding citizenship. In 1992, he received the Canada 125 Anniversary Medal for community service. Mr. Perry will be resting at W.C. TOWN FUNERAL CHAPEL, 110 Dundas Street East, Whitby, on Wednesday, August 30th 2017 from 2 – 4pm and 7 – 9pm. A Funeral Service for Mr. Perry will be held at W.C. Town Funeral Chapel on Thursday, August 31st 2017 at 11:00am. Interment at St. John’s Anglican Cemetery, Whitby. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
