Condolences

Condolence From: Margaret Law
Condolence: To all of Don's family and friends, I am so sorry for your loss. Having worked with Don for a short period when he first got hired at U of T, he was nothing but kind, generous and a wonderful human being. He even gave me a copy of a Cat Stevens cd when he and I were talking about him one day during our shift. I still have the cd after all this time. Don, I will miss you.

Condolence: Dear Aunty Kay, Steven & Family. While we have not seen each other much in the last few years, we remember Don very fondly. The last time we met was at Don and Helen Boyles 50th anniversary, Don made a big impression on our daughters and they have kept up with the family and Dons career. Amanda created Sklepowiches of the world face book group and it has been successful in connecting us with many family members. We are so sorry to hear of Dons passing, may god be with all of you. With our love and affection. ❤️

Condolence: I only met Don a few times at his Robarts' post. He was invariably kind, helpful and humorous. It was always a pleasure to deal with him. He was very knowledgeable about the collection and interested in many subjects. I am shocked and saddened to hear news of his death. He'll be missed. Condolences to his family, loved ones and friends.

Condolence From: John Gilinsky
Condolence: Please accept my deepest sympathies at the sudden passing of Don who has left this earth too soon. As a frequent nay chronic user of especially Robarts Library I found Don to be extremely knowledgeable, helpful, courteous and welcoming above and beyond his normative job duties. As a user I will miss his positive attitude and general positive outlook. Don probably didn't know that he in fact made many more friends than he realized. He was just too busy trying to help everyone to notice just how most people most of the time really appreciated him. That old saying you don't know how good someone is till they leave is so true in Don's case. Don I hope you are in a far better place now, are happy and restful. You more than deserve it.

Condolence: Everyone who knew Don is probably still reeling a bit. I knew Don only at his workplace, 'over the counter' so to speak at Media Commons, Robarts Library, University of Toronto. As an instructor at UofT, I'd frequently make use of Don's expertise. He helped me more than once with tracking down citations for a journal article or difficult-to-find films. More to the heart of the matter, Don always made me feel welcome and every few weeks we'd have easygoing chats about film, social issues and, sometimes, about work-stress during times of change. It would be wrong to say that Don and I were close buddies, but it was always a pleasure to have those casual chats 'over the counter'. It was a huge shock to learn of his sudden death - why, I'd just seen him the night before! - and I'm sure it will be a long time before I stop expecting to encounter his ever-friendly presence at Media Commons. Thank you, Don. Rest in peace.

Condolence From: CUPE 1230
Condolence: To the Family of Don Sklepowich! On behalf of all the Sisters and Brothers of CUPE 1230, the library workers at the University of Toronto, I would like to express our deepest sympathy. We were Don's family away from home. Don had many friends and colleagues at the UT Libraries. His sudden passing is a great loss to all of us. We all mourn that we will never hear Don's trademark "Good-morning!" at 4:30 p.m. We have lost a friend, a colleague, a member of the University of Toronto community. May his memory be eternal! Wasyl Sydorenko, CUPE 1230, President.

Condolence: I have only known Don a few years, then only via audio and video link-ups at his dear friends’ Robin and Julia. I joined them on lap-top computer at their table for virtual dinners and, as in days of old between pen-pals, could come to know the man’s soul though never meeting in the flesh, and a generous and good natured one his was. There is now an empty place at that table. A unique character, only he could fill it, and, gone, that place will remain a shrine in memory and respect for him. As a musician, in my fledgling attempts at doumbek, he was a REAL percussionist whom I could look up to and take his constant good will toward me as encouragement to continue. I now approach competence and look at my instrument knowing that as long as I live, my playing will always be accompanied by my salute of thanks and friendship to Don, may he rest in peace and may you, who read my words, find peace in your memories or a man who, taken untimely from us, gave more than many while he was here.

Condolence From: Eric Domander and band members
Condolence: It is with great sadness that I write this message. I had known Don for 32 years. I met him when I worked at Radio Shack evenings during high school and Don was a regular customer. We "hit it off" immediately through our common interest of music (both drummers), recording and electronics. He invited me to jam with a group of much older guys at the Towns Rd building and our friendship grew. I even attended a great New Years Eve party in Beeton Ont, only through Don's invitation. Later we lost track of each other, as people do, but then upon needing a rehearsal room, I remembered Don and the Towns Rd building. I visited, not expecting Don to be there, but sure enough, all these years later, he still was and upon moving in, our friendship reconnected. We would often drop by each others rooms, just to chat and share a laugh. Don also became a good friend to my band mates who immediately recognized his audio brilliance, as well as his down to earth, intelligent, humorous outlook on life. We always enjoyed it when he was around and recently hired him to help the band out with a live concert/video shoot, to which he was an ESSENTIAL element in its sucess. He always approached his work with a strict sense of duty and professionalism which often amazed myself and my bandmates. I even suggested to another band, that they hire Don to record their new album, as he had done such a stellar job on our project and they intended to follow through with that in the coming weeks. I speak on behalf of my many past and present band mates in saying "We love you Don ! You were stolen from us WAY too early and we'll miss everything about you greatly !" Rest in peace my friend.

Condolence: Over the 40 years I've known Don, we shared much common ground in music, recording, media and a love for life. In the early years, we each shared multitudes of friends and experiences, but over time, we grew apart as did the friends, much like ink on blotting paper. In the more recent past, my wife and I reached out to Don ,and he soon embraced sharing time with my family a few times a year and was "adopted" readily by them. I re-entered the musical life in a small way in 2005, and Don mentored me in that renaissance... I learned the finer points of audio engineering largely thanks to some guidance from Don. We planned to continue recent musical and video collaborations, and for him to visit Julia and all our kids/grandkids more often. I think he really enjoyed that family fellowship, a break from the city swirl and studio blur and a taste of unconditional love in our country setting. Me, Julia and all our kids will truly miss our future time with Don, and will always cherish the times we had. He was especially good with the little ones, it was a side of him we'd never normally see in the Studio or University world. May he rest in peace - the mix will never be quite the same without him.
